Leverage & margin requirement calculator

How much margin a position needs, or how big a position your margin allows. Free, private, runs in your browser.

How it works

  • Initial margin = Position size ÷ Leverage (initial margin rate = 1 ÷ leverage)
  • Maintenance margin = Position size × maintenance margin rate
  • Max position = Available margin × Leverage

Example: a $10,000 position at 10x needs $1,000 margin. $500 at 20x controls up to $10,000.

Higher leverage means a smaller move can liquidate you. Size positions by risk, not by maximum leverage.

FAQ

Does leverage change my profit?

It changes the margin you put up, so returns on margin are larger, and so are losses.

What is maintenance margin?

The minimum margin needed to keep a position open. Fall below it and the position can be liquidated.

Do fees affect margin?

Exchanges may reserve margin for fees. Keep a buffer above the minimum.
