Break-even calculator

How many units do you need to sell to cover your costs? Free, private, runs in your browser.

How it works

Contribution margin per unit = Price − Variable cost.

Break-even units = (Fixed costs + Target profit) ÷ Contribution margin. Break-even revenue = Units × Price.

Example: $1,000 fixed costs, $50 price, $30 variable cost → 1,000 ÷ 20 = 50 units ($2,500).

FAQ

What counts as fixed costs?

Costs that do not change with each sale in the period, such as rent, software, salaries and insurance.

What are variable costs?

Costs per unit sold, such as materials, packaging, payment fees and shipping you pay.

Why round units up?

You cannot sell part of a unit, so the break-even point is the next whole unit.
